Visualization of asymptomatic atherosclerotic disease for optimum cardiovascular prevention. A population based RCT within the VIP ─ VIPVIZA

Prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) fails. Visualization of silent atherosclerosis has the potential to optimize the communication of CVD risk, lead to appropriate risk perception, enhanced motivation for prevention and optimum compliance among doctors to clinical guidelines and adherence among patients to life style change and medications for control of risk factors. Taken together results are expected to contribute to reduction of premature CVD morbidity and mortality.

In this intervention study, 3200 participants in the Västerbotten Intervention Programme, a county wide cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention program, undergo two carotid ultrasonography exams, three years apart. Half of them and their doctors receive visualized information about the silent atherosclerosis. Barriers and facilitators for prevention will be evaluated. The hypothesis is that visualized information about silent atherosclerosis will improve risk prediction, risk communication and risk perception, and lead to optimized adherence to prevention guidelines among doctors and patients, and on long-term reduction of premature CVD.
